‘Dancing bears’ is something that has been going on in the world for far too long. Bears are taken from the wild as young cubs; they are brought up beaten, abused and neglected. It has gone on for a whole life time too long, action to prevent this is majorly overdue and something needs to be done. This post will contain some distressing images. But everyone needs to be aware of what really happens.
Bears are bred to perform, and they go through horrendous experiences for a life of torture and misery. Often they are drugged so that they are ‘tame’ and ‘obedient’ so that they don’t attack their trainers/owners. Often they’re teeth are removed without anaesthetics to prevent injury to their owners, and their claws removed too. A hole is often made through the top of the nose so the rope can go through the hole and out the nostril so they won’t attempt to escape and can be easily manipulated and controlled through the pain of pulling the rope.
This is disgusting, it is still legal in some countries and is used illegally as a form of begging in countries such as India, Bulgaria and many more.
This needs to stop. The bears are taught to ‘dance’ through a behavioural psychological process called ‘conditional learning’. The process is that when they are cubs, their paws are oiled and they are put on a hot plate which burns their feet (paws). The music is then played alongside this burning. They go through this process many times so that when they are put on the street they hear the same music playing and associate it with the pain of their feet burning and this is why their feet move about and gives the impression they are ‘dancing’.
This is a fear they have learned and they have been taught to associate the music with pain so it may appear they are enjoying the dancing and seem ‘cute’ and ‘intelligent’ when actually, you are witnessing a conditional fear that has been maliciously put unto these animals. By watching these ‘shows’ or even paying the beggars, you are contributing to this sick and torturous industry, as it only encourages them.
What you should and can do, is report it (as in many countries it IS illegal) and also by helping to change animal rights and signing petitions to get this banned in all countries and to get people sentenced for it.
