Podcasts You HAVE to Listen to!

p1If you’re not listening to podcasts then, the first step is LISTEN TO PODCASTS! I will analyse my favourite shows and recommend different genres so that hopefully you can find one that works for you. If you have a long drive in a car on your own, have an office job, or are on a plane, or anything! The possibilities are endless! Then you should really start listening to them.

♦SWORD AND SCALE (< click me)

l1Definitely up there in the top podcasts I listen to (I say listen, because present tense, they’re still making episodes every couple of weeks!!!!) This is a true crime podcast which is gripping right from the first episode. Each episode is a different crime story apart from the odd 2 part-er episodes. I have listened to all the episodes to date and will continue to every time there is a new one released. Mike Boudet narrates this podcast amazingly and has very well structured shows.

Genre: True Crime
Rough Length of Each Episode: 40mins
Rating out of 10: 10!
Recommended Episode to Start With: Episode 44
Good Points: Current crimes/news stories, and has real 999 voice calls
Bad Points: If you are sensitive or not fully into crimes, this is not one for the weak stomached. This podcast goes into the most gruesome of cases and doesn’t spare any details. Some of these episodes can be really upsetting.

♦SERIAL (< click me)
l4This podcast has made quite a name for itself. If you haven’t heard of Adnan Syed or Hae Min Lee already then you really need to hear this podcast. Sara Koening looks back on the 1999 murder of 15 year old Hae Min Lee. Adnan Syed was arrested and charged with her murder with little to no evidence with flaws and contradictions all through it. She revisits the murder scenes and has regular phone calls with Adnan himself. She looks at police interviews and a way to prove his innocence. Since then Adnan has been granted a re-trial. This is an on-going case and you can follow it and make your own decisions!

Genre: True Crime
Rough Length of Each Episode: 30-40mins
Rating out of 10: 9
Recommended Episode to Start With: The first!
Good Points: Real audio of phone calls with Adnan Syed in prison
Bad Points: Some listeners say it can be bias at times

l5This is simply just Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant interviewing and questioning Karl Pilkington. Weird and wonderful discussions arise in this podcast and is hugely entertaining!! Karl Pilkington is hilarious and really brightens up your day and can make time go much quicker! Just pop this on in the background and you’ll be surprised how quickly your working day finishes!

Genre: Comdey
Rough Length of Each Episode: 25 mins
Rating out of 10: 8
Recommended Episode to Start With: Season 1 Episode 09, The Jockey
Good Points: This is super funny! If you love Karl Pilkington then you’ll know how entertaining this could be!
Bad Points: The episodes are too short and there are a limited number of them L

l3This show is simple and straight to the point. Each episode is different and just helps to pass time. Some episodes are super interesting and really gripping, others more relaxed and are just nice to chill out with a little story telling. The episodes don’t follow any kind of order, and you can listen to whatever one you want whenever!

Genre: True Life Events
Rough Length of Each Episode: 30mins
Rating out of 10: 7
Recommended Episode to Start With: Season 4 Episode 51 “What if your roommate had a deep dark secret?”
Good Points: Short and sweet, stories told in first person by the person.
Bad Points: Not a structure or interview style and some episodes aren’t as good as others.

♦NIGHTVALE (< click me)

l2I stumbled across NightVale because I wanted something easy to listen to. It’s about an imaginary town where no logical reasoning applies! The description literally is “WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff’s Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events.” Say no more!

Genre: Random Fictional Story
Rough Length of Each Episode: 25-30mins
Rating out of 10: 7
Recommended Episode to Start With: Any! (But probably the first)
Good Points: Absolute nonsense, easy listen
Bad Points: Isn’t for everyone, isn’t gripping or serious.

SO! There you have it. 5 podcasts to really get into that will keep you occupied for a few hundred hours or more! There are so many podcasts out there and sometimes it’s hard to find the smaller lesser known ones.

So if you know of any more then let me know in the comments below !! I’d love to hear about them.
